Yet another favorite of mine from the 80's, Say Anything stars a young John Cusak as Lloyd Dobbler - a high schooler about to graduate who devotes himself to the pursuit of Diane Court (played by Ione Skye), the aloof class valedictorian.What's cool about this movie is that while it is a teen romance, it is not painfully corny or running rampant with slapstick scenes or gratuitous sex scenes. No, Say Anything actually has a story that is beyond trying to get in to someone's pants.
John Cusak's Lloyd is totally loveable and although he seems to have stalker-like issues, he genuinely is in love with Diane Court. Her father, however, is NOT amused with this relationship because Diane has a huge educational future ahead of her whereas Lloyd has no real aspirations other than kickboxing. John Mahoney (the dad from Frasier) is great in his role as the father even when he is being mean to our hero Lloyd.
One of the most memorable movie scenes of all time is when Lloyd is standing outside of Diane's window with his boombox over his head while Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" plays. THAT is a great song!
So get your 80's on again and check out "Say Anything" - this is John Cusak at his finest.
